Emma in Avon, CT

Just Adopted! Here is Emma with her new mom...

Emma is a big mush ball who loves everyone she meets and is a friendly, active, exhuberant girl.

She is puppy-like and playful though 2.5 years old, but because of knee and hip issues, has the slightly stiff gait in her back end of a more middle aged or older dog. She loves toys and will empty the toy box joyfully running off with her treasures, loves to take walks and to trot around after you in the house, sometimes plunking all 34 pounds of herself on your lap to cuddle and then give a sloppy kiss or two. Think goofy lab puppy, and that is Emma's personality.

She can be mischievous, attempt to eat her toys, bark when she wants something, and will sometimes jump up to greet people in her happy, enthusiastic way, and so she'll benefit from positive based training (of which she's getting a good start while in foster care). That said, she's so cuddly, fun, gentle and sweet, and, while she's pretty active, she settles down very well for a nap or chew time with a nylabone, just happy to be with you, keeping out of mischief, watching tv, or hanging out on a dog bed so long as she's worked off some energy with people time and nice walk or playtime.

Emma is a delight to be with, is very loving and devoted, and thrives on being near her people. She'll be loyal and devoted to you, but also has never met a stranger, and so is a dog you can take with you many places and one who, with training, could make a great therapy dog.

She really enjoys children and is fine with other dogs and cats, although we'd be unlikely to place her with a family who have more than one other dog or cat (she grew up as an only dog) or who have more than 2 children under the age of 10 (we want to make sure she gets lots of love and attention + she's likely to abscond with little kids toys).

Emma does have a bad knee that pops in and out and also has significant hip dysplasia, (issues common to the breed). This doesn't get in her way currently, and may not in the future, but a new owner needs to be prepared that she could have problems requiring medical intervention down the line, most likely palliative care (pain relievers), but (long shot) possibly surgery. Currently, the specialist vets recommend she lose a significant amount of weight (she's 34 lbs and ought to be 22-24), continue taking walks, and that she take a supplement for hip and joint strength (we're giving her Gylco Flex 2).

Because Emma really wants to interact with and be with people, the best situation for her would be with a family where someone is home a good part of the day. She grew up as a city dog, and so does not need a fenced in yard (is happy to take walks on a leash).
