Kermit in Santa Fe, NM

Just adopted! Here is this beautiful boy with his new mom...

Kermit is a 6-year old neutered male who is being fostered in Santa Fe, New Mexico.

He is a sturdy dog in excellent health except for needing his food softened with water after he had to have all of his teeth removed due to infections. He is working on housebreaking after spending his life at a puppy mill. He knows how to use a dog door to go outside but is still tempted to mark his indoor territory if left unsupervised. He is crate trained and views his crate as the safest place in the world. He will always need a crate to retreat to.

Kermit is a loving dog who likes sitting in laps and is a great lap dog, but he is timid and is initially intimidated by new situations and loud noises.

He now not only accepts but is greedy for affection, which is a long way from the terrified dog we picked up. He knows his name and will come for treats.

If he is alone for too long, he will remind us that he is due for love. He sleeps in his crate and is quiet all night. He is a great watchdog, with a fierce bark and a strong desire to defend his people.

Kermit no longer cowers when we reach down to him and he no longer runs away from us when out of his crate. He will still startle when someone makes a rapid gesture towards him and does not like anyone near the door of his crate or he is very hesitant to go in. He is extremely eager to please his people and makes good eye contact.

Kermit gets along well with other small dogs, but wants so much affection to make up for all the years he had none that we think he would be fine as a single dog who is the focus of his family’s attention. That said, he's started to play with our other dogs and really seems to enjoy them, so a home with another friendly small dog might be nice too.

He has never been around large dogs, cats or children, so we don’t know how he would do with them, but we suspect children would intimidate Kermit.

Kermit will need an owner who truly wants to participate in rehabiliating a dog to help him blossom and will do best with an owner who wants to spend lots of time with him and who will not ignore Kermit when home.

Kermit loves to run and likes being outside. He is used to a fenced yard and will happily spend a half hour or more cruising his turf quietly.

Kermit is a good eater and not picky about food. He can take in an unlimited quantity of dog cookies if anyone asks him to!

Kermit is still getting used to life being kind instead of cruel and we are sure he will be a totally devoted, grateful and loving companion to an owner willing to make the investment in helping him bloom.
