Barbie in Tulsa, OK

I am Barbie, a 5-year-old female Cavalier who is very shy and a bit timid after living all my life in a breeding facility. Learning that there is a whole different world to explore has been a process of baby steps. Socialization, bonding, play, or even love were not words I was familiar with until I came to rescue. I didn’t have much attention from humans so finding out what kind, loving touch can feel like has been slow for me to accept. I will let you pet me when I am on the couch and have started approaching you to be close. I have recently started greeting my foster mom at the door with my foster siblings, but run to my couch once she gets in. I wag my tail a lot to show that I am happy to see you even if you just walk by my couch.

My foster mom calls me a couch potato because that is where I have lived since I arrived. I started in a dog bed that I never left, then graduated to the couch. It is my safe place and I will run to it after venturing out in the house. I like to explore but only when I don’t think you are watching or even home. I use a dog door and am fully house trained, but I prefer to go when I am alone. My couch has been my home base. I like to decorate it with my foster’s shoes, shirts, pj’s or any other random item of hers. I don’t chew or destroy it, I just like to sleep on it.

I like my foster brother and sister and have recently been observed running with them in the yard. I also like to sleep with them on the couch. Young grandchildren have visited and are fine as long as they don’t try to pick me up. Even when my foster mom picks me up, I go limp and run back to my couch at the first opportunity. I have not been on a leash, but it would be helpful to get around where I’m needing to go. My foster mom thinks I’m closer to leash training but has let me progress at my own speed so far.

I am a healthy girl at 19 pounds and love to eat. I have graduated to eating on the floor by my couch if you don’t hang around me to watch me eat. I was spayed and had my teeth cleaned when I arrived. I had a great check up and have a strong heart and good structure. I am microchipped and am on heartworm and flea preventative medications.

I would really like to live in a quiet home with someone home a lot who is patient with my need to take my time to learn my environment. A fenced yard is necessary and a dog door would be a plus. Other small dogs are ok, and would prefer older children.
