Calilou in Columbus, OH
Here is the pup with her new mom…
Calilou is a precious Blenheim girl who snuggled up to her momma alongside her littermates born 10/12/2021. As the puppies matured, the breeder realized that Calilou’s “soft spot” was not closing and contacted Cavalier Rescue USA. Calilou inherited a condition known as Open Fontanel. She has also been diagnosed with Hydrocephalus. Though Hydrocephalus cannot be cured, it can be managed to give Calilou the life and love she deserves.
Butterfly kisses are Calilou’s specialty. Her tender cheek-to-cheek presses will melt your heart when holding her for cuddles or taking her medicine. She loves to visit the gardens and inspects each blade of grass along the way. She twirls in circles both small and wide, she prances and dances and trots through her day. Her head tilts slightly to the right, her neck tenses when lifted up, and she needs a moment to allow her neck to relax. She has favorite toys, but her constant companion is Miss Bunny! Sir Dragon squeaks when she pounces on him just right and doesn’t mind being tugged outside in rain or shine. Froggy is her first love, her most prized, her pillow.
Learning doggie commands does not interest Calilou yet though she has mastered “Come”. Potty training is in process. Her parents will need patience and consistency to help her achieve reliable potty manners. She believes all leashes are problematic. Thankfully, she loves her stroller and walkabouts are safer in the stroller than paws-on-the-ground for now.
Providing opportunities throughout the day for play and physical activity will continue to improve her strength, stamina, and coordination. She enjoys several “recess” periods to play outdoors with her foster parent daily, or to “hunt” around the kitchen on rainy days for treats and toys strategically placed for her discovery. Watching her discover Froggie in the kitchen, recovering him, and taking him “home” will warm any heart with love for this sensitive girl. New parents will see that her physical safety is a high priority due to her open fontanel with specific attention to the prevention of head bumps, rough play, and falls.
Mealtimes consist of softened Duck kibble mixed with a scoop of Duck Pate. She dines at a leisurely pace in a quiet place away from distractions as she will forget to eat if there is too much activity nearby. Her favorite treats are Zukes Peanut Butter & Oat Mini’s that her foster mom squished flat which makes them easier for Calilou to chew.
Medically, Calilou is heart clear, spayed, UTD with age-appropriate vaccines, and microchipped. As mentioned, she has been diagnosed with Hydrocephalus for which she takes Omeprazole twice daily to reduce her cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) and, thereby, reduce the pressure on her brain. Her family must demonstrate a commitment to supervise her activity, and provide for her neurological Specialty care throughout her life. Applicants experienced with Hydrocephalus and neurological conditions will be given preference.
