Casey in Little Rock, AR
Here is Casey with his new family……..
Casey just celebrated his 1 year anniversary with Cavalier Rescue USA!
Casey is a senior Blenheim Cavalier mix who came to Cavalier Rescue USA after his previous owner passed away. The paperwork he came with says he will be 16 in July but his foster family is finding that hard to believe. While he sleeps most of the time, he will run the fence line with his foster siblings and bark at the neighbor dog in a fun game of, “who can run the fastest.”
Casey is an extremely well-mannered gentleman who is house broken with few accidents since he came to Cavalier Rescue USA. He had a dog door in his previous home and is use to coming and going as he needs. He is excellent on a leash. As long as he has a fenced yard, daily walks are not required for him. Having a dog door would be great as he was used to that in his prior home. He does not require a crate.
After Casey came into Rescue he developed epilepsy and started a low dose of Keppra 3 times a day. We are happy to report he has been seizure free since starting Keppra. His new family will have to commit to making sure he receives his medication on time.
In the evening before bed he needs some encouragement to get up and go outside, especially if he has been sleeping. To avoid an accident, his foster mom will pick him up and carry him out into the grass. Before applying, please know he is an armful and weighs 24 pounds.
Casey is heart clear but does have arthritis that requires him to take a joint supplement from now on. Due to his stiff joints and short legs, he does not like to be up on the furniture. He is content to sleep in a dog bed on the floor in his foster mom’s bedroom and doesn’t like to be up in the big bed. You will find him sleeping at your feet while you are watching TV, so watch your step when you get up. Even though he is not a cuddler, he does wants to be next to and keep an eye on his human at all times. Think of him as a shadow. He does like to be petted and enjoys his human’s attention.
He has some hearing loss and might not realize you have gotten up if he is snoozing or if you call him, but he can hear other dogs bark and other higher pitched volumes. While he isn’t a “yapper” he can and will communicate with you when he needs something by barking several times and making eye contact with you. He can get especially vocal while you are preparing his food and if he doesn’t think you are doing it fast enough.
He is up to date on his shots, microchipped and had a dental when he came into rescue. In a few weeks he will be having another for a troublesome tooth. While in rescue, he has had several benign growths removed including a large lipoma off his back leg that has improved his mobility.
Casey gets along with other Cavaliers but was an only dog in his previous home. He’s not always a fan of bigger dogs, but gets along well with his foster’s lab after some boundaries were established. Older children are fine, but a home with younger children will not be considered.
The perfect home would be someone who is retried and home most of the time, or someone who works from home. At soon to be 16, Casey deserves to have as much company as possible for the rest of his life.
Please also know that a one level home without stairs or the ability to gate off the stairs would be a must. He will lose his footing while trying to maneuver stairs.
