Gatsby in Loma Linda, CA
Meet Gatsby, a handsome 7-year-old Tricolor boy born 4/17/15. Like his literary namesake, Gatsby is a full of hope charmer, dreaming of a loving forever home. Gatsby made his way into rescue when his owner was unable to adequately address his daily needs and turned to CR-USA for assistance.
Gatsby has thrived in his foster home, spending his days with two older, calm pups. There are several cats in his foster home and after some initial interest, he now ignores them. Gatsby currently lets out his energy on long daily walks. He has a beautiful thick, wavy coat and appreciates being regularly groomed so he always maintains his stylish good looks.
Gatsby was diagnosed with a Grade 4 heart murmur at his rescue exam and was prescribed medication for this common condition in Cavaliers. Once cleared for surgery, Gatsby was neutered and had his first ever and very much needed dental procedure and lost every single tooth! Don’t tell Gatsby he is now missing all his teeth as it doesn’t stop him one bit from enjoying a soft food diet for meals and treats. The good news is he will not need a costly anesthetic dental procedure ever again. His tongue occasionally peeks out of his mouth, adding to his spirited, impish appeal. Gatsby is microchipped, current on vaccines and also had an ear infection which has been resolved. His new family must be willing to monitor his heart health with regular cardiology checkups.
Gatsby may be small in stature but is definitely full of personality. He has met other dogs and while he is not aggressive, he will often let out a reactive bark when they are nearby. Since there isn’t a human that Gatsby doesn’t like, being king of the castle would serve him well, receiving all the affection of his new family. He craves human companionship, so low alone hours would are what he needs. Gatsby also loves adventure therefore it is important that he is supervised around any open doors or gates. A secure back yard would be ideal for him to play and safely explore in. A daily routine and positive reinforcement are key to helping Gatsby achieve his personal best.
Gatsby has been wearing a belly wrap in the house but now that he has been neutered, his marking tendencies should ease. In a new environment, his family will need to monitor this behavior and keep him on a consistent potty schedule to ensure success. Gatsby should be taken out first thing in the morning, periodically throughout the day, evening and right before bedtime as he doesn’t signal when he needs to go out.
If you are looking for an errand companion, Gatsby is your guy. He rides beautifully buckled in the car, eager to venture out to new places. Everyone he meets remarks on his handsome appearance and dynamic, outgoing personality.
Gatsby currently sleeps soundly in a play-pen but once he demonstrates reliable potty habits, he would love to cuddle in the big bed. Gatsby has not been kid tested and would probably do well with older, pet savvy children.
