Henry in Derby Line, VT

Update 11-2-24: We are not accepting any more applications at this time as we have several good prospects for the pup.

Meet Henry! Henry is a timid, bouncy Cavalier with the sweetest brown eyes. He is eagerly looking for a family to show him trust and love. Henry wants so badly to love people, his wagging tail makes it obvious, but he is very skittish and will back away when hands reach out to touch him. Henry was born on February 21st, 2023. Although details about the first year and a half of his life are unknown, it is clear he suffered some sort of trauma. He was released to the rescue due to no fault of his own. His foster family has been working with him on how to trust people again.

When Henry came into his foster home he was unsure of everything except how to play with his new puppy siblings! Henry will bounce and run along with the other dogs, zooming all around the fenced yard. He has started learning how to play with toys but still has no idea why the humans keep throwing the toys away from him. Henry will do best in a home with a fenced yard and another dog who can help bring out his playful personality and teach him how to be a dog.

Henry is microchipped and up-to-date on immunizations, heart-worm, flea and tick prevention. While in his foster home, he was neutered and had a dental cleaning which included sealants. Henry is heart and lung clear. He is one healthy pup!

Henry has been working on sit and recall (come). During training it is clear how nervous he is with people. He needs consistency and training in all areas. Henry is treat-motivated but unsure of what is being asked of him and nervous about taking a treat from a human hand. He will gobble up treats when placed on the floor. Since Henry is still learning, his new family should be committed to continuing his training. Classes for socialization and training will be required for this boy.

Henry has started crate training and is doing well through the night with no accidents. Henry had shown signs of marking his territory before his neuter. He does well in a large play yard with a comfy bed, toys and water. He has not shown any signs of marking while in his play yard. The marking usually subsides not long after being neutered. His house training is in progress. As always, consistency and a regular potty schedule will be key to his success.

Henry enjoys having his people near him. To help foster confidence and ensure success in his house training, we would like someone home with him most of the day. He is currently living with two small dogs, a large puppy, a cat and two human sisters, ages 4 and 8. Henry has done well in his foster home by watching and learning from his foster dog siblings. He will do best in a home with another playful, young dog of similar size that can help him learn the routines of his new home and especially how to trust people. Respectful children in the home would be fine, as long as they understand that Henry will need time and space to warm up to them. Henry has never shown any aggressive behavior. He is just unsure and submissive. Henry will do okay in a home with cats. In his foster home he has given his kitty sister space.

We are searching for a very special owner for Henry. People applying for Henry should have patience, love, commitment and faith in his ability to be the best pup he can be. Henry needs someone who will help him see the world is not always a scary place to be. Applicants must be capable of inspiring trust and confidence through love, affection and positive reinforcement.
