Jewel in Ithaca, NY
Meet Jewel, an incredibly sweet 4-year-old Blenheim girl. She came into rescue from a situation of severe neglect, but you would never be able to tell that based on her sweet temperament and incredible trust of people.

Jewel is a classic lap dog, and prefers more than anything to be sitting on or next to any person. She is being fostered with another Cavalier and they get along well. She also enjoys going to the dog park and meeting other small dogs; she can be quite playful with other dogs and especially likes to lead a chase. She also lives with 2 cats, and though she sometimes wants to chase them, they have learned to live together pretty peacefully.

Jewel was fairly sick from malnutrition and flea anemia at the time of her rescue. She was very underweight, weighing only 11 pounds. After getting her on a normal dog food, she was still having stomach issues and has since been diagnosed with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). She is on a prescription diet for this condition, and as long as she is fed only this diet, her disease is completely controlled. Her weight is up to 17 pounds now, and she still may gain a little more as she continues to put on muscle mass. Jewel was also diagnosed with a heart condition related to malnutrition, and is currently on medication for her heart – she will need follow-up with a cardiologist to determine if she needs this medication long-term.

Jewel came into rescue with no housetraining, but has been making good progress in that area with few accidents in the house. As of now, she doesn’t alert when she needs to go out, but as long as she is taken out on a regular schedule, she will go to the bathroom outside reliably. She prefers to go to the bathroom when she is off-leash, so a fenced in yard would be a plus. She has learned to walk on a harness and leash and enjoys leisurely strolls as well. Jewel is extremely food motivated in training, and in her foster home has learned the commands for “watch me”, “sit” and “down”.

Jewel will do best in a household with someone home most of the day, or with someone who can bring her to work, so she can be kept on a good housetraining schedule. She currently goes to work every day with her foster mom, and is a well-behaved employee! She would do well with a single person or a family, and has shown that she gets along with children as young as 5 years old. She would do well with other small dogs, but also would be happy being an only dog.
