Layla in Cinnaminson, NJ

Update 6-14-24: Layla has a home visit with a prospective adoptive family, so we aren’t taking more applications for now for this sweet pup.

Meet Layla, a sweet and gentle 5-year-old female Tricolor Cavalier who came into rescue from a breeding operation. At approximately 18 pounds, Layla is a more timid pup and slowly working on gaining her confidence after spending her entire life as a breeding mama.

She’ll need a gentle and patient new home with other calm and confident resident dogs, and people who can spend the time to work with her on becoming more comfortable. She’s been in foster care for several months, and while she’s made good progress, she’ll need a nurturing forever home where she can finally learn what it means to be a loved and pampered furry companion.

Layla is healthy, having received a spay and dental while in rescue. While she has only a few teeth remaining, she’s feeling much better and is back to eating kibble. She enjoys her treats and takes them very politely. Layla is also up-to-date on vaccines and monthly preventatives and currently heart clear. She’s very good and patient about having her nails and fur trimmed.

Given her past history, Layla is still working on leash training and housetraining. She seems to better on leash when using a harness. Her new home will need to offer positive reinforcement with a daily schedule to continue the work she’s achieved in her foster home. While not 100% house trained yet, she’s getting there, and a consistent schedule with someone home to take her out at regular intervals will make the training a lot easier.

Layla is currently being fostered in a home with another resident pup and has had playdates with other foster pups. She’s done great with all dogs and cats, and while she takes a bit of time to warm up to people, she eventually does enjoy human company.

She’ll let you pick her up and sit with her but won’t yet come over on her own. She is not aggressive at all, but just a bit wary and initially anxious. She wants to be around people and will often sleep under foster dad’s desk while he’s working. She’s just still working on gaining her confidence so she’s not so easily startled. This will come with time and patience, and then she’ll truly blossom.

An ideal home for Layla would be a loving and patient adult home with another calm and confident resident dog or two to show her the ropes. Someone home during the day is preferred, as is a fenced yard, given her interest in chasing squirrels.

If you can provide Layla a loving and patient home, please fill out the online application and email New Jersey Cavalier Rescue USA coordinator Rebecca Plimpton ( and advise her that you’ve applied for Layla. Applicants must live within a reasonable driving distance.
