Lukas in East Lansing, MI

Meet Lukas, a sweet, loving and curious Cavalier. He’s come to Cavalier Rescue USA searching for his new family after being retired as a breeder. At five and a half years old (born 12/22/2018), Lukas is still learning about life inside a home, but he’s smart and eager to please. At nearly 10 pounds, he’s a petite boy who will instantly melt your heart. He has a snaggle tooth that sometimes sticks out, which makes him even cuter!

He loves to nap—and snore—on a couch or the floor near you, but also bark and let you know if he sees a rabbit or bird! Lukas will follow you around room to room, the very definition of a Velcro dog and loves snuggles and cuddles with humans and dogs alike. He is a little shy when he first meets people, but he does warm up quickly and loves attention.

Lukas is learning to walk on a leash and loves spending time in a backyard, rolling around in the grass. He’s also quickly learned his name, how to go up and down the stairs with ease, and is working on a couple commands like “come” and “sit.” Lukas has no food aggression, taking a few minutes to start in on his meal, but he always finishes his bowl. Once he’s done, he’s quick to celebrate with a run around and roll around in the house to get his zoomies out.

He seems to love every person and dog he meets and has been comfortable around older children and men. However, you might hear a little howl in the house if he can’t find you! Lukas is crate-trained, going into the crate while you run errands and at nighttime—but he would prefer to snuggle up in the people bed at night. Lukas is still nervous of car rides, but he’s a very good boy and lays right down in the car whether he’s in a crate or in a doggie car seat.

Lukas does have some separation anxiety which he expresses through barking and howling when he’s in the crate or separated from his foster mom or brother in the house. He would do well in a home with at least one other dog who’s patient and playful and who can continue to show Lukas how to be a dog.  While in foster care, he hasn’t chewed or destroy anything. In fact, he’s still learning the ropes with toys, not quite touching them yet. He loves his foster dog brother and watches him closely to follow his lead. A patient family, with someone home during the day to work with Lukas in his potty training is a must for this little fella. He’s doing better and better with his potty training, but may need to wear a belly band indoors initially to minimize male marking.

Lukas will be neutered and will receive a dental and then be ready for his forever home. If you are interested in Lukas, please complete the online application if you haven’t already and then email June Kirchgatter at June.cavaliers@gmail.com.
