Maggie in Chesterfield, MO
Update 9-16-23: We’ve received several promising applications for this pup so aren’t taking more for now. Thank you!
Marvelous Maggie is becoming a trusting and affectionate Ruby young lady born 10-2-21 despite the tragic life she knew before residing in her foster home two and a half months ago. She came out of a situation that taught her that people might hurt her. The action of holding arms out and bending down to pick her up caused her to cower and blend into the wall, often snarling to warn the person approaching. When given the chance to approach people on her own, she slowly has gained assurance that people can be trusted and provide her with love, food, fun and peace.
Gaining more trust each day, she comes to her foster Mom and allows her to pick her up. She jumps up on the couch or lays at her feet, sleeps snuggled up to her, enjoys being held, follows her around the house (always wanting to be near her). She even comes over to be picked up when not solicited. All of these behaviors have evolved in the past couple of months. What an amazingly resilient little lady!
Maggie lives with four other Cavaliers, three cats and foster Mom whose daughter and older grandchildren visit often. She thinks she is a guard dog. When she hears any unusual sound or someone new enters the house, she barks to alert foster Mom but will cease as she is assured. She does not use a crate. She is left with the other pups in the kitchen area with metal gates at each end when foster Mom leaves the house. She sleeps through the night and potty training is in progress. Food is very motivating. She has been eating kibble with occasional treats, carrots and frozen green beans. Maggie is a smart little one and would benefit from continued obedience training. She does want to please her person once she trusts them.
Maggie will continue to blossom and thrive in a secure home with an adult or adults who are committed to lots of love and training. She will reward you everyday with licks and loyalty. Children could make her nervous, especially younger ones since they move quickly. Quick movements can still startle her. A secure yard is required to keep her safe. She is very quick and could run aimlessly if a door was left open. She is relaxed in her home environment and secure yard with her family of Foster Mom and furry foster pets. Maggie’s leash training is in progress. She wears a harness with identification.
Medically, Maggie is healthy. Since coming to Cavalier Rescue USA, she has had shots updated, been micro-chipped, and spayed. She is a petite stature at 14 pounds. Her coat is getting more glossy and healthy everyday with nutritious food. She looks like a Bonnie Irish Cavalier lass! Definitely a lady with a sweet personality!
She has become acquainted with toys and is enjoying them. She can show guarding with the other pups at times though. She does know where her food bowl is and goes right to it at mealtime, however, she does try to steal food if given the chance. A slow feeder is best for her since she tends to inhale her food and should eat her meals in a separate area from other pups.
During the day Maggie will often be seen sleeping next to or on top of another Cavalier. Outside of her safe house and yard she can be anxious. Extra care must be taken with a secure harness to keep her safe. A stroller would be a good way to have her learn the world around her and provide more socialization, of course with a harness and holding leash. She seems to really like car rides. She is in a raised car seat so she can watch the world go by. Starbucks puppuccino is a favorite!
