O’Reilly in Deering, NH
Here is O’Reilly with his new dad…
O’Reilly is one mellow dude. Large of frame and even larger of heart, he exudes a Buddha-like calm, smiling placidly and contentedly, seeming to ponder the universe with his kind gaze. He is quick with affection and friendly to all. O’Reilly abides.
O’Reilly is a ten-year-old neutered Blenheim male born May 17, 2014 who came into our care after his owner passed. He was loved and cared for in his previous home as evidenced by his complete set of vet records, perfect house training, and confident demeanor. Though he is in good health for his age, he has grade B2 mitral valve disease which will require twice-daily medication for life and yearly echocardiograms. Luckily, he is a champ at taking his pills!
O’Reilly entered foster care significantly overweight. Although he’s not happy about it, he has been complying with his weight loss regimen and has made significant progress and currently weighs 32 lbs. Within a few months he should reach his target weight of around 25 pounds. He’ll always be a big boy, but he is such a gentle giant, a lovable lunk. He has some arthritis in his hips, but only what is typical for his age. He has no other health issues; his teeth, eyes, joints, etc. are all as you would expect for a Cavalier his age. He is up to date on all his vaccinations and flea/tick treatments. The vet assures us that O’Reilly’s conditions are all reasonable for his age and breed, and that he is medically cleared for adoption.
Anyone who meets O’Reilly will immediately be struck by his gentle, sweet nature. He is friendly with everyone he meets: people, dogs, other creatures. He’ll win your heart with his doe eyes, mellowness, and nearly constant adoring smiley gaze. He vocalizes a few times per day, but always for a purpose: I need to go outside. I’d like a treat, please. The water bowl is empty. It’s dinner time! Please give me some affection. He rarely barks in a reactive manner (at squirrels, etc.).
O’Reilly enjoys walks but doesn’t need or want a lot of exercise (so if you’re looking for a hiking companion, he’s not your guy!). His back legs and hips show age-appropriate arthritis, which can make it daunting sometimes to maneuver stairs and furniture. Luckily for him, he gets a daily joint supplement and we make sure he has help when he needs it. He has a luxuriously thick coat that will benefit from regular grooming.
So, what does O’Reilly love? Rice cakes, scratches behind the ears, a little space to stretch out, a helpful boost on to the sofa, treats, riding in the car, and meeting people. He likes to be in the room with you, but not in your lap or even on the same furniture. He would make a fine office dog as he is always gentle around people, even in crowds. He usually sleeps on the floor at night, although he’ll occasionally come on the bed.
O’Reilly is a senior dog who had the misfortune of losing his lifelong companion. He is seeking a kind-hearted soul who will appreciate his company and provide him with the security he needs to remain content. O’Reilly will thrive in an environment where he can be near his people who indulge his calm demeanor and take care of him. He is quiet, gentle, loving, happy. He exudes mellow energy, brightening every room with a contented smile. O’Reilly demands little but will certainly bring much joy to the person lucky enough to adopt him. He relishes any time he can spend with you and will always be happy to be near. Who has room in their heart for this sweet dude?
