Orion in Cinnaminson, NJ
Hello, and welcome to Orion’s world. Pronounced O’Ryan, he shines as bright as the stars in the constellation of the same name. Orion is an approximately 6-year-old male Blenheim Cavalier released from a commercial breeder. When he came into foster care, he was emaciated and muscle wasted, weighing only 15.5 lbs despite being a taller boy. Every bone in his body was evident, his coat was coarse and discolored, inevitable ear infections as well. His teeth were in horrible condition, some of which had been reabsorbed by bone. Orion underwent two separate dental procedures because the time under anesthesia was too long to complete the process in one session. Orion has 10 teeth remaining.
Despite his rough start to life, Orion is a sweetheart with a typical Cavalier personality. He is a very curious, playful, athletic boy. Despite being 6 years old, he acts very much like a puppy. He loves his foster siblings and foster people (who will be very sad when he leaves). Orion loves to play zoomies and fetch in the yard; he is the sweetest boy on this planet or any other! He even likes the cat, though sometimes he may chase the cat, in a playful way of course. When Orion has worn himself out, he is the best snuggler. He loves being very close, curled up in a little Blenheim donut. Orion also loves toys. He will chew and eat paper and will steal any paper-type items he can reach, so he does need close watching. Honestly, he will chew and try to eat most anything left within his reach so an extremely vigilant family is very important. He does not guard his loot though, and he gives up his prize readily. Orion loves people of all sizes but little ones with little toys would not be a safe environment for him.
Orion is crate trained, although he may protest for a minute. He would love to share the big bed with his pack mates; he enjoys sleeping snuggled up against his favorite people! Orion walks well on a leash, but he is a strong boy and may need some additional work to improve his walking manners.
Being a breeding dog, Orion had a strong urge to mark his territory, but since his neuter that has greatly reduced and he is now almost totally housebroken, although in new surroundings he may regress and need a belly band for a short time. He is just beginning to alert to go potty by sitting at the backdoor, but once in a new home he may develop a different signal.
Upon arriving at his foster home, Orion was evaluated and referred to a veterinary cardiologist. Orion was confirmed to have a grade 3 murmur, common in the breed. He currently has no symptoms, but has been placed on Vetmedin twice a day. He will need to be seen by a board certified cardiologist every 6-12 months and may require additional meds in the future. When Orion first came into foster, he had a very difficult time gaining weight, despite being an enthusiastic eater. He had several tests to rule out any disease processes, and all tests were negative. Some changes were made to his diet and since then he has gained about 2 lbs. and he is now 18 lbs. He could stand to gain another pound, but he looks good now. He is not food aggressive but he needs to be fed separately since he will help his pack mates finish their food as well. His coat seems to be naturally on the shorter side, with some feathering on his legs and chest. This makes him a breeze to bathe, even though it’s not his favorite activity. Otherwise, Orion has normal knees, hips and eyes and is up to date on vaccinations and monthly preventatives.
An ideal home for Orion would include someone home during the day, another dog of similar size and temperament, a clutter-free home with vigilant family members given his desire to chew, a very secure fenced yard and someone willing to continue to monitor his heart conditions with regular trips to the cardiologist. And, of course, someone available for snuggles and cuddles!
