Poet in Washington, DC

JUST ADOPTED!

Here is Poet with her new family…

Meet Poet, a sweet and extremely cuddly Blenheim Cavalier who will be 3 years old some time in December. Due to personal health reasons and an upcoming change in living circumstances, Poet’s previous owner made the difficult decision to ask Cavalier Rescue USA to help Poet find a new forever home. This sweet girl is more than deserving!

Poet is by and large a calm, affectionate dog who loves nothing more than taking a long snooze in your lap – she will sit there all day long if given the opportunity, getting up only when you do and following closely behind. She can be playful with the occasional burst of energy but is all around pretty laid back despite her young age.

Poet is very food motivated — interested in both kibble/treats and your dinner! It’s important to make sure human food is kept out of reach. Poet is good on the leash for a dog with limited prior exposure to leash-walking.

Poet is in perfect health with no known health conditions. She is 18.5 lbs., microchipped, spayed, and up to date on all of her vaccines.

While Poet spent her first few years in a house with a large, fenced-in yard, she’s been adjusting to city/apartment living – though would still be happiest with space to romp around and no elevator between her and the bathroom. Her new family will need to work with her on signaling when she needs to go potty to avoid accidents. Poet could also benefit from some training on basic commands and demonstrates mild reactivity to unexpected noises. She tends to get scared easily and has started to bark more frequently since settling into her foster home.

Poet gets along well with her foster brother, a male Cavapoo around the same age/size. She can be timid around bigger dogs. She would do well in a home with another friendly dog of small or moderate size or as a single pup. She tends to be on the submissive side and easily startled, so a home with very young kids wouldn’t be a good fit, but she’d be fine with older, gentler children.

Poet is a quintessential Velcro-dog and is most comfortable and at peace when she’s snuggled up with a human. Her ideal home would be with an owner who works from home, is home the majority of the time, or an active retiree. Poet’s temperament is also perfectly suited to be an office pup – for those with enviable dog-friendly office arrangements! She appears to suffer from some separation anxiety when left alone that could benefit from professional guidance if it becomes a recurring issue – and same with crate training. Needless to say, Poet is quick to bond with humans and loves to stay close to her pack.
