Roosevelt in San Antonio, TX

9-28-24: We’ve received several promising applications for this pup so aren’t taking more for now. Thank you!

Born 9/21/21, Roosevelt just celebrated his third birthday! Roosevelt is a Ruby Cavalier with a contagious smile and a plethora of cuddles. Roosevelt came to Cavalier Rescue USA through a commercial breeding operation. When Roosevelt first arrived at his foster home he was timid of everything from toys to people. Even though Roosevelt did not have a traditional puppyhood, he slowly came out of his shell and is now living life to the absolute fullest.

True to his Cavalier nature, Roosevelt prefers to spend all day next to his foster mom. Even though it took a couple days, when Roosevelt discovered what a ball was he immediately fell in love. Roosevelt will gladly play fetch inside or outside, he is also content to simply have a ball in his mouth. Roosevelt’s greatest passion is being outside. Similar to balls, for weeks outside was simply a place Roosevelt’s foster mom took him to go potty, until he saw a squirrel. Roosevelt’s spaniel instincts took over, since then he has joyfully been watching, chasing, and protecting the backyard from any squirrel activity. Roosevelt’s foster mom thought he would never come in after he discovered squirrels but she was wrong!

Simply put, Roosevelt’s heart and devotion belong to his people; he is loyal above all else. After playing and a good walk Roosevelt will cuddle next to his foster mom while she works from home or snuggle in her lap in the evening. Roosevelt sleeps through the entire night and he is always ready for a nap during the day! Roosevelt loves being brushed, cuddling close, and giving lots of kisses. Roosevelt is learning new things daily and has an eagerness to please his foster mom. Consequently, he is often called a “good boy.”

Roosevelt would do well with some training. He appears to be very smart and has learned to come when his name is called and walk on a leash. Roosevelt is 99.9% potty trained. He has never had an accident at night. After much work he has stopped marking (almost) and he has not had an accident in the house in over a week. Roosevelt has a manly bark. He only barks for two reasons: when he is very, very excited or when he sees a squirrel. Overall, Roosevelt is a quiet dog.

While most of the time he seems indifferent to their presence, Roosevelt will get jealous. Because of this, his foster mom believes Roosevelt will be happiest as the only dog in the home. Roosevelt has shown no aggressive behaviors towards other dogs; he simply likes to be the center of attention. While Roosevelt does well with his foster family he is timid around new people, especially men.

Roosevelt is neutered and up to date with his recent health records and vaccinations.

Roosevelt’s love of the great outdoors and wildlife suggest he would need to go to a home with a fenced in backyard where there is someone home to play and cuddle with him most of the day. He would prefer a home without other dogs so he could get all the attention. Roosevelt’s foster mom thinks he would do equally well devoted to one person or sharing his love with a small, quiet family!
