Sammie in Kearney, MO

Sammie is a 5-year-old Black and Tan female born 4/19/18. After her owner passed away, a family member caring for her realized she had lost weight and was always thirsty. This otherwise healthy girl has diabetes. As they were unable to accommodate Sammie’s needs, they released her to Cavalier Rescue USA. Sammie is being fostered north of Kansas City, MO in Kearney.

Her current regiment is eating a high protein and low-carb kibble topped with ground chicken twice a day, followed by an insulin injection. Since she has only recently been diagnosed, her insulin amount will likely change and is certainly something that will need to be monitored all of her life. Her thirst and urination amount have stabilized, so we are hopeful her current regiment may not need to change any time soon. She only receives high protein treats and only a few daily as needed for rewards after shots, and training purposes.

In addition to being well introduced to a variety of dogs of different sizes, she has been introduced to cats, and 1st-10th grade kids. She really enjoys car rides. In fact, she routinely asks to stay and sleep in the car after returning home. She is a vocal dog. She “talks” to get inside or outside as oppose to scratching. She barks when left alone but settles down soon enough. When first entering foster care, she would bark each night after getting in her crate, but no she longer does that. Sammie likes to investigate around her large yard but isn’t an overly active dog. She is learning to walk on lead as exercise is a natural blood sugar reducer!

She is spayed, current on all immunizations, on heartworm and flea/tick prevention, and teeth do not need a dental. Her previous owners clipped fur short her but that will grow out. If her tail is any indication, she will have a FULL coat.

Since it is imperative her diet and insulin be monitored closely (specific time each day) we feel she will do best with a family with a consistent routine.
