Sierra in Jackson Springs, NC

Sierra is the sweetest, most loving, devoted dog you will ever meet. As a 5-year-old female breeder surrender, she had several litters of puppies in her former life and is now spayed. Sierra is very healthy overall and is heart clear, but she is deaf and was quite heavy when she came into rescue (28 lbs). Her diet plan is working well and she has lost about five pounds; her target weight is 20 lbs. Sierra has had extensive dental work and only has front teeth and a few molars left. She tested positive and has been treated for Lyme disease, and a retest is recommended in September.

Sierra’s hearing loss hasn’t seemed to cause her any issues. She quickly learned the routine with her foster family and fits in perfectly with other dogs. If she is sound asleep, a gentle stroke will wake her, then she quickly assesses the situation and joins in the fun. Since she can’t hear, you could call her whatever name you choose, as long as you call her for dinner! She responds very well to motions and signals, and in a multi dog household she will follow the others wherever they go.

Sierra is very reliably housetrained and has not had an accident in the time she has been with her foster family. Close supervision in her new home is recommended (as would be appropriate for any new dog in a household) until she learns where she is supposed to potty. She sleeps quietly in a crate at night but would also love snuggling with her people in bed!

Sierra has not shown much interest in toys, but she is a big paper thief! Tissues, toilet paper, junk mail–she does love paper! She will happily give back what she has stolen when you ask. She loves car rides and going to new places. A trip to the local Farmers Market was a real highlight. She greeted everyone (dogs, kids, and adults) like they were her long-lost friends. This is a confident, outgoing, happy, but quite calm dog who loves to trot around the fenced yard, leashed walks, and going on new adventures. But what Sierra wants most in life is to lie on the couch with her head on a family member’s lap while softly snoring. She will shadow her people around the house, sometimes getting underfoot, always wanting to know where they are.

Sierra would do best in a home where someone is home most of the time. Because of her hearing loss, a fenced yard for her safety is required. She could also use a like size well-mannered canine companion or two for her to buddy up with and take cues from. A home with older respectful dog-savvy children would be ok, but not one with younger children that could startle her. Her new owners need to be committed to continuing her weight loss journey and keeping her active and socialized. She has not been tested around cats.
