Spencer in Mechanicsburg, PA

Spencer is a very handsome 8 year old Blenheim boy who came to Rescue after being used as a stud dog at a breeder’s farm. He quickly earned the nickname, Mush Dog. He absolutely melts into your lap when being petted and is a grade A lap warmer. He also has a cute habit of talking back when praised and fussed over.

Spencer has adapted very well to life as a companion dog. He loves the back yard and has learned to chase birds. Squirrels are a different matter and he hasn’t quite figured them out. He likes to go out after eating where he “patrols” the perimeter of the back yard. He’s a very quiet boy and only barks when he sees another dog walking in “his” street or at mealtimes. Spencer walks well on a leash and loves to go for rides in the car. He gets along well with his foster pack which includes 2 older girls, and 2 puppies, one male and one female. He occasionally has some guarding issues over high value items such as bully sticks. He is crated at meal time and when the dogs are left alone in the house. He enjoys meeting people and other dogs. Other than the rare occasions of resource guarding, he is very friendly, loving and laid back. Housebreaking has been a breeze. There was considerable marking, that has quickly disappeared after neutering. We would recommend he wear a belly band until he gets accustomed to his new surroundings.

Spencer was a bit overweight when he came into rescue at 22 pounds. However, he has been getting a healthy diet and exercise and is now down to 18 pounds, which is a good weight for him. He has a few health issues. He has a grade 4 murmur, but is not currently on any medication. He also has significant arthritis in his right knee, probably the result of a torn ACL, as well as arthritis in his neck. The only medication he is on is rimadyl for pain, and only if needed. While in rescue, he was neutered, microchipped, had a dental and lost 4 teeth.

The ideal home for Spencer is one where his family is home most of the time. He loves sitting beside his person on the couch and would prefer to sleep in the bed with his people. He currently sleeps on the floor in a large dog bed with two of his foster sisters. He sleeps all night, but does snore. Spencer chases cats and has a high prey drive, so he needs a home without cats or other small pets. He would do well as an only dog or with another calm laid back dog. Since he does have arthritis in his knee, a home without a lot of steps would be best. He does steps here in his foster home, but it may become more difficult for him in future. He should also be fed from a raised dish which would help his neck arthritis. Since he feels most comfortable in a calm quiet environment, an adult home or one with older, respectful children would be best.
