Riley in Pine Top-Lakeside, AZ

Meet Riley, a loving 6 year old Cavalier boy born 1/6/2019. Riley came into rescue when his parents started traveling for a year. Although he loves to go for rides, being in the truck all day without a house to play and run in was not a happy time for him. Riley’s parents made the sacrifice to offer him a better life through rescue.

Riley is a sweetheart who loves to hang out with his foster family. He loves to follow his Foster Dad around and sit close to him and cuddle. If Foster Dad is away, Foster Mom enjoys the attention and Riley loves them both. He loves to play with balls and is great at entertaining himself with them. Riley loves to go for walks and does well leashed. He loves to go for rides and meeting people. Going to the vet is a great adventure for him.

Riley tends to gobble down his food, so a slow feed dog bowl would be helpful. He can be a little territorial about his food bowl, so letting him walk away before picking it up is helpful. Riley eats a Special Diet of Hill’s to help with his joints as he has a slight limp when he is tired. Meloxidyl seems to help him walk without pain. He does have dry eye and so takes drops twice daily for that. He is also taking Potassium Bromide as he was diagnosed by a veterinary neurologist with REM Sleep Disorder.

More about that… REM Sleep Disorder is a medical issue where the pup is in a very deep sleep and if you try to wake him up by touching him, he is unaware of where he is at, is frightened and can snap. If you let him wake up on his own or by making a noise like clapping, he quickly is his loving, sweet self. Riley likes to sleep in his crate and this is very helpful with the REM Sleep Disorder. He can wake up by himself without human interference.

Riley is a fun little guy. He loves playing with a ball or other toy. While he was raised as an only dog, he’s done great with the dogs in his foster home and does well with other dogs that are sweet tempered. An active family to take him for walks or hiking and engage him in play would be perfect. A fenced yard in which he can play is required. He is very loving to his foster parents and will be to his forever family too.
