Lacy in Savoy, IL

Meet Lacy! Also known as Lacy Lou, Loulou or simply Lou! Lou came to Cavalier Rescue USA when her owner was experiencing health issues of her own and could no longer care for Lou. Lou is an incredibly sweet, spunky, and resilient little lady. She is 5-years-old and will be 6-years-old on July 11th.

Lou loves everyone she meets. She is instantly your best friend and enjoys getting all of the pets and attention you can give. She gets along with other dogs and kids. She also LOVES hard chew toys and likes to amass them on the couch or bed. She will play with one for a few minutes and then go get a new one over and over. I think her record is 10 toys! Her funny little personality is really starting to come out and her tail is always wagging. She is great on a leash and enjoys walks as well as exploring the fenced in backyard but mostly she just wants to follow her people around and be close to them. Lou would be happy as an only dog or in a home with other dogs.

She is sleeping in a crate next to our bed but would LOVE to sleep in the big bed with her forever family. She is very cuddly and your typical velcro Cavalier. We say she is a “close talker” because she will crawl up on your chest and get as close to you as possible when you sit down. Then she retreats to your side or is happy to be placed next to you. She hangs out with us on the couch and bed before bedtime but understands when it is time to go to sleep in her crate.

Lou is working on her house training and starting to tell us when she needs to go outside by barking at us and running towards the back door. She does not have accidents in her crate at night. During the day, she goes outside about every 2 hours and will need a loving, patient home dedicated to continued training. It may take her some time to learn her forever family’s schedule.

We knew she had epilepsy and quickly discovered she had bladder stones and a urinary tract infection as well. Lou started on a special urinary care prescription diet which helped to dissolve hundreds, yes you read that right, hundreds! Of small stones but the diet did not work to dissolve 4 larger stones. Lou had successful bladder stone removal surgery and is fully recovered. Her forever family will need to have Lacy’s urine analyzed every 3-6 months for any early indication of a urinary tract infection as that is going to increase the risk for bladder stones. She also needs to continue eating her Hill’s prescription diet u/d Urinary Care food. She loves her food and gobbles it right up!

Lou currently takes Keppra and Phenobarbital for her epilepsy. She had 3 seizures each a week apart and saw a Neurologist at the University of Illinois Veterinary Teaching Hospital. They tested her Phenobarbital levels and determined she was below the therapeutic level and increased her Phenobarbital dosage. She takes Keppra every 8 hours and Phenobarbital every 12 hours on a schedule of 7AM, 3PM, 7PM, and before bed(10-11PM). She takes her pills easily in a little bit of soft food. Her epilepsy is now better controlled with her seizures currently over a month apart, shorter in duration, and less intense than before. She should continue to have her Phenobarbital levels tested with her primary vet every 6 months.

While at the U of I Vet Med, she also saw an Ophthalmologist who diagnosed her with dry eye. She has been on prescription eye drops for 6 weeks now and her tear production has significantly increased! Her forever family can have her tear production retested at their primary vet but it is likely she will need prescription eye drops for the rest of her life. It is only one drop in each eye twice a day and she lets you easily do it! We also put artificial tears in each eye twice a day about 5 minutes after the prescription drops.

Lou also had a much needed dental cleaning where she had 10 teeth extracted but does not seem to miss them one bit! Lou is spayed, up to date on her vaccines, and preventatives. We have found her health issues to be very manageable. She is a really happy go lucky girl who can’t wait to meet her forever family!

Lou would love to be the center of your world. If your family can provide Lacy Lou’s forever home please fill out our online application, if you haven’t already and then contact Meg Hutson Eisenmenger at Cavalierrescuemeg@gmail.com to let her know of your interest.
