Simon in Chicago, IL
Simon is a 3-year-old Blenheim Cavalier born 4-1-22 . He is a sweet, curious, smart, and tall boy!
He was at a breeding facility for the first two years of his life. He started showing signs of not being well and was given away to his first home to try to figure out what was going on. He continued to lose weight over the next year, and the owner reached out to Cavalier Rescue USA to help as the medical expenses were too much.
After blood work it was determined that Simon has Exocrine Pancreatic Insufficiency, known as EPI. When you have EPI, your body can’t digest food and absorb nutrients properly because your pancreas isn’t making enough enzymes. Fortunately EPI is a manageable condition! Simon takes a pancreatic enzyme supplement powder sprinkled on his food and gobbles it right up. He will require this supplement for the rest of his life. The enzymes are about $200 per month.
Simon’s health has greatly improved since being on the enzymes! He has gone from 13lbs to 18lbs in only a few months! His stools are still a little softer than we would like them to be so we are adding in a daily probiotic in hopes this will help and the cost of this is minimal. Additionally Simon had 9 teeth pulled during a much needed dental procedure – don’t worry he has plenty more and can eat food, treats and bones with no problems.
Simon would be best in a home where he will have plenty of attention and time with his person or people. He does not like when his person leaves the house so he will need some extra care and patience working with him to help him with this extreme separation anxiety. He is currently on anti-anxiety medication to help manage his separation anxiety. The cost of these meds is minimal.
He LOVES going places with his people. His foster family lives in a very dog friendly community so he has been enjoying going shopping, out to eat, and anywhere his foster family goes!
Separation anxiety is common to see in a dog that has been through what Simon has been through. Due to his rough beginning he does not like to be in a kennel- ideally he would not need to use one and would have a room or safe space for him to be when he is home alone.
Simon prefers to be as close as possible to his person and prefers to sleep in his dog bed next to his foster family’s bed with space to roam. He is reliably house trained but will still need to learn his forever family’s routine and may take some time to adjust in his new home.
He does well with other dogs both on leash and in the home and would benefit from having another friendly confident dog in the house to learn from and ease his anxiety. He has not been exposed to cats but based on his interest in all smaller animals and the interest of trying to eat them – a cat free house would be best. He definitely has the Cavalier hunting instinct! He enjoys long walks and has good leash etiquette. He would love to take in all the animals while on walks, relaxing at the park or in a yard. He is food motivated but is polite when he is told no.
He is still learning how to be a dog in many ways, after all he was in a kennel for most of his life. He would love to learn new tricks and commands and does great with kids!
