Astro in Dillsburg, PA

He’s a riddle, wrapped inside a mystery, inside an enigma! Astro is a Merle Tricolor Cavalier mix. He is approximately 5 years old and came to the rescue from a commercial breeder in Lancaster County with no background information. He was happy to join a new pack and didn’t take too long to settle in. Astro’s coat was completely shaved prior to coming into rescue but it is starting to grow back. 

Besides his outgoing nature, Astro has many common Cavalier qualities. He is very Velcro, especially with “Mom”, but loves all people and his foster brothers. He is not overly dominant or submissive, mostly neutral. He doesn’t show much interest in toys or balls, but likes to chew bully or other like sticks. He doesn’t chew household items, but might try to steal a piece of Mom’s clothing  just for fun. He is active when going outside, but content to relax and rest most of the day.

Astro didn’t know how to walk on a leash, but we are working on that and he enjoys walks with a harness for safety. When he first came into rescue  he was not housebroken, so he must be taken out often to reinforce training. He likes to go outside and has improved since his neuter, but is currently still wearing a belly band inside.

He is a big, healthy boy! He is healthy with no heart murmur or any required medications. He does have luxating patellas, but they do not seem to be bothering him and it doesn’t slow him down. Astro has lost a little weight since coming into rescue, but he is still at least 20 pounds and would benefit from some additional weight loss. He should be kept at healthy weight to take the additional strain off of his knees. Astro lost 3 teeth with his dental cleaning, but he is healing and eating just fine.

Astro has been sleeping in a crate at night and does not need to go outside overnight. He would be happy to sleep next to his new owners if allowed. He is allowed on furniture. He will usually wait to be lifted, but sometimes jumps.
