Bailey in Overland Park, KS

Bailey is a very sweet 5 year old black & tan girl looking for her forever home. She was born Jan 18, 2020. Her previous owners were facing health issues, so they made the difficult decision to release Bailey to Cavalier Rescue USA. We were told that she had back problems and that stairs were difficult for her. They believe that she may have been hit by a car before they got her.

Our vet examined her and x-rayed her back, which showed evidence of a previous spinal injury. Bailey had not been to the vet in over two years – she badly needed a dental, and she was not current on vaccines. She had the dental cleaning and lost several teeth. Our vet recommended anti-inflammatory meds to manage periodic back pain, and she doesn’t appear to be having discomfort since starting the medication. Bailey’s heart is good (no cardiac murmur), and her knees checked out fine (normal patella). She’s totally housebroken, spayed, micro-chipped, up to date on vaccinations, recovered from her dental, and is on monthly flea/tick/heartworm preventative.

Bailey is an absolute sweetheart – very loving and affectionate. During the first few days in foster care, she was emotional and showed extreme separation anxiety. When foster mom left the house, even for a short period, Bailey would bark loudly and whine and cry. She likes foster dad, but foster mom is her favorite person and primary caregiver. The vet prescribed Trazadone to calm her, and it helped. Now that Bailey has been in foster care a little while, she’s having much less anxiety and only needs those meds occasionally. She will do best in a home where she would not be left alone for long periods.

Bailey likes that foster mom works from home, because she always wants to be near her main person. But really, she likes everyone – other dogs, cats, adults and children. Because of her previous back injury, care should be taken when lifting her. Therefore, we do not recommend a home with young children or toddlers who may not understand that they should not try to pick her up. She does fine with a few steps off the back deck, and she knows how to use doggie steps to get up on the couch. Much of the day, you’ll find her napping on the couch, and she sleeps through the night in foster parents’ bedroom.

She loves her foster family – mom, dad, daughter, small dog, and two cats. She enjoys playtime with the other dog and the cats. Foster mom takes the dogs on a walk, and Bailey doesn’t pull at all. When foster mom takes her daughter to school, Bailey likes to ride along. She gets excited to go in the car and is an excellent passenger. She goes straight to and from the car without being asked – like it’s her duty to make sure the daughter gets to and from school each day. Bailey loves to be included in family routines, and we believe she will be a devoted member of her forever family.

Bailey is being fostered in Overland Park, KS. Her ideal forever home would be one with a fenced yard and someone home most of the day. Another dog in the house would be great, and she is fine with cats. Older children who know how to be gentle are fine.
