Dee in Coatesville, PA

Melody- or Dee as her foster mom has taken to calling her is an incredible sweet and gentle little girl. She came into rescue from an owner who was no longer able to continue to care for her. We do not have a lot of information about her life before rescue but we do know that she spent her time living in a shed with little human contact interaction.

Dee absolutely adores her foster dog siblings and follows them and her foster mom everywhere most days. She is her foster mom’s little shadow for the most part though there are some days when she prefers to stay in one of her safe places such as her foster mom’s bed or in the family room. Dee does not like to be touched or picked up so she uses soft stairs to get into bed and has just recently started joining on the couch the same way.

Dee was diagnosed with a condition called Episodic Falling Syndrome (EFS). This causes her body to tense up when she feels big emotions and sometimes overnight. This means if she gets scared or overly excited she will lose control of her body. It is very frightening for her as she is still awake but not in control of her body. Dee will typically have her most intense and longest episodes overnight which require a medication given intranasally. It can still take several minutes for the episode to stop so a calm and nurturing environment is a must. She sleeps in bed next to her foster mom so that if she has a medical episode her foster mom can act appropriately. She is on a different daily medication to help control her episodes. She also takes a daily pain medication for chronic neck and back pain.

While in foster care, Dee was spayed.  The next day she developed Acute Hemorrhagic Diarrhea Syndrome (AHDS) and spent a few days in the ER.  The cause was never confirmed, but it was most likely caused by the stress from her spay surgery or post surgery medications. Fortunately she recovered nicely and is back to herself.  

Dee has started to enjoy bully sticks, snuffle mats, lick mats, pupsicles, and short training sessions. She has made tremendous progress while in foster care for many months.  She needs a very special family who understands that she has been through a lot and will take time to learn to trust and feel safe. She does not seek out affection and is fearful of being handled. However she is loving and will come give her foster mom, foster grandma, and pet sitter a little soft boop with her nose on the back of our legs from time to time. She has also now started getting very excited for meals and will sing her happy song while wagging her tail.

Dee will need a physically fenced in yard as she can’t walk on a harness and leash well due to EFS. She is working on potty training and needs a patient and understanding family that will help continue her potty training progress without causing her stress.  She does follow the other dogs outside for potty breaks.

Dee is good with cats and must go to a home with another calm, dog loving dog who is okay with her shadowing them and snuggling them.
