Emma in Carlisle, PA

Emma is a very sweet little black & tan girl. She came to rescue from a commercial breeder. Unfortunately, she wasn’t in the best condition. She was both underweight and undersocialized. She was ravenous and no amount of food would cause her to gain weight.

Shortly after coming into rescue, Emma was diagnosed with EPI (Exocrine Pancreatic Insufficiency). This means that her pancreas does not produce enough enzymes for proper digestion. This is not something that can be solved by diet alone. Pancreatic enzymes are sprinkled on her food at each meal. The enzymes allow her to properly absorb the nutrients in her food. The only problem with this, from Emma’s perspective, is she has to wait 20 minutes for the enzymes to start breaking down the food before she can eat. In addition to the enzymes, she is given a B12 capsule once a day since EPI can cause vitamin B12 deficiency. The cost of the enzymes and the Vitamin B12 is approximately $35/month. After being diagnosed, she began treatment with enzymes. Emma quickly flourished and to date has gained 3.5 pounds. She will need to be on these medications for the rest of her life. Emma is now at a healthy weight of 14.5 lbs.

While in rescue, Emma was microchipped, spayed and had a dental. She lost 4 teeth at her dental, but that has not impacted her ability to happily eat her meals. When she came to us, her coat was in fairly poor condition, but since she was put on the enzymes it is now glossy and growing.

Personality wise, she has absolutely blossomed. When she first came to her foster home, she was afraid to move off the porch. EPI and constant confinement had caused her muscles to waste away. Now with a good diet and exercise, she has muscles and boy, can she run fast! She started taking a step or two into the grass. Now her favorite pastime is chasing the squirrels in the yard. She also gets the zoomies, especially when her foster mom comes home. She will speed around the yard and let out a funny little growl with each step.

Emma is a reserved dog. She is not one to jump up on your lap, but if you gather her up, she just melts in your arms. Her nickname is “Wet Noodle”. She loves her foster family and is thriving in a home. Emma is a quick learner. She started clicker training and has already mastered sit and down. Positive reinforcement only. Her housebreaking took a while, but she seems to have mastered that also. She hasn’t had an accident in the house for at least a month. She is friendly when meeting new people and new dogs. She enjoys car rides and ignores the resident cat. She has met children, but is rather timid, so children over 10 would be the best.

Emma’s perfect home would be a quiet one with someone home most of the time. She does fine when crated if the foster family needs to run errands. She would enjoy the companionship of another dog. It would be ideal if she had a nice fenced in yard. Enjoying the yard is number three on the list of her favorite things. The first is food, then love. This is a little dog who just found out what it’s like to have love, good food and a soft warm bed. She will reward these little ordinary things with complete devotion.
