Kingston in Rogersville, MO

Meet Kingston! Kingston is a sweet-natured, 3-year-old Cavalier, born 1-23-22.  He is a healthy boy who came to Cavalier Rescue USA from a commercial breeder. When Kingston first arrived at his foster home, he would not come out of his crate. He was timid, shy, and uncomfortable around people. However, since living with his foster mom and Cavalier housemate, he has made significant progress in overcoming his skittishness and fears. In just a few short weeks, Kingston progressed from hiding in his crate to following his foster mom around the house and accepting treats from her hand!

Kingston quickly discovered squeak toys, and he loves them. He will come running and barking to play whenever a toy is squeaked. He enjoys grabbing the toy and playing tug-of-war. If you toss the toy, Kingston chases after it and brings it back to his safe place. Sometimes, Kingston will sneak toys from the toy box and pile them on his blanket. His foster mom has found a collection of toys in his bed! Kingston never guards or protects the toys and will let his foster mom take any toy he has gathered.

Kingston gets along well with his Cavalier housemates and enjoys playing with them, running around the yard, and snuggling together on a blanket. While outside, Kingston will come when his foster mom calls him. However, he remains cautious around people, and when approached, Kingston will shy away–unless you have a treat in your hand.

When Kingston is in his safe place, he will allow his foster mom to pick him up. He does enjoy sitting on the couch with her and will put his head in her lap while she pets him. Snuggling is new for Kingston, and he is doing well with being close to his foster mom.

Kingston has a great appetite and enjoys chewing on bones, especially those with peanut butter on them. Kingston is generally quiet. However, he does bark at the door and strangers, or when he is outside, at the chickens!

Kingston knows his name, he walks politely on a leash, and enjoys going outside for a stroll, especially if his Cavalier housemate is with him. Kingston is ready to begin learning basic obedience commands such as sit, down, and stay. He sleeps in a crate at night, keeps his crate clean, and will signal by pawing if he needs to go outside to potty.

During the day, Kingston does very well on scheduled potty breaks. He had a few accidents in the house when he initially arrived. However, now that he has adjusted to the household routines, he is reliable. Potty breaks should be every three to four hours to ensure Kingston remains accident-free.

Kingston has no ongoing health matters and no heart-related issues. When Kingston first came to foster care, he had significant gingivitis and dental disease. Subsequently, Kingston had a dental cleaning and a few teeth removed. Since the procedure, Kingston has good dental health and can chew his food and treats without pain. He is neutered, up to date on his vaccines, and on flea/tick and heartworm preventatives.

Since his first days in foster care, Kingston has overcome his initial fears. Kingston takes treats and licks cheese or peanut butter from his foster mom’s fingers. He plays with his Cavalier housemates, enjoys walks, and chews on bones. Kingston is generally a calm, yet playful boy. He is gentle, sweet-natured, and does jump on people, or cause mischief. Kingston potties outside, and he is reliable on a schedule.

Although Kingston has improved, he remains cautious around people, avoids physical contact, and is not a snuggler. He has not shown any aggression or possessiveness while in his foster home. He is an intelligent boy who learns quickly and has a strong food drive, which makes adjusting to his forever home easier. Time and patience are essential to Kingston’s progress and future success, particularly in interacting with people and embracing new experiences.

Kingston will make an ideal companion for individuals and couples with the time and patience to work with Kingston on his people skills, home manners, and basic obedience. He will do best in a home with established routines and another easy-going, mature dog.
