Luigi in Brooklyn, NY

JUST ADOPTED!

Here is Luigi with his new family…

Luigi is a healthy, fully vetted, 16-month-old (DOB 12/4/22) Black & Tan Cavalier who steals hearts and laps everywhere he goes.

Luigi is a stunningly beautiful, fun-loving, eager-to-learn young man who was an owner surrender due to having high energy behaviors in a home with a toddler. Some impulse control issues resulted in the dog nipping at the young son over an ice cream cone.

Puppies need structure! With training and boundaries in his foster home, Luigi has become much more of a gentleman at the table and around food and better understands his place within the family structure but needs continuity to ensure he solidifies this training. He loves to learn and is a very attentive student! We are recommending a home with children 12+ who can help reinforce boundaries and may be carrying around fewer handheld snacks while he learns ‘leave it’ and ‘drop it.’ Luigi loves his new boundaries and has been thriving as a result of the structure. His adoptive family should be one who plans to keep up his training–both because he never got his puppy classes and deserves to have that (as all dogs should), but also because he loves to learn.

Luigi is potty trained and does not appear to mind his crate if he has a high value treat to munch on. During the day, Luigi rests quietly in his bed while his work-from-home foster dad is on calls and in meetings. He perks up when it is time for his favorite things–long walks, rides in the car and playtime with foster sister! Luigi loves all dogs and humans, so his absolute favorite thing is long walks on the busy Brooklyn streets where he can sniff everything and meet everyone. For the remainder of the day/evening in the home, he matches energy– if we are playing fetch in the yard he bounds after the ball or toy solo or with his doggy friends. If we are resting in the home, he is a classic lap dog. He is an A+ snuggler on the couch and in bed where he sleeps through the night.

In his foster home, he has a foster sister who is quite a dominant character. Luigi has followed her lead and is submissive in their dynamic. They play regularly and he has learned to respect her space. They worked this out over the course of a few days. Luigi appears to be submissive with larger dogs and loves to play and run around with them!

Regarding time alone–we have not left Luigi for long lengths of time but do not think, in typical Cavalier fashion, that he would not enjoy too much time left alone! There may be some moderate separation anxiety present that will need some slow exposure work. He will bark upon departure. His previous family said that he would also bark when they left home but when they would return he would have settled. As we reside in a NYC apartment with neighbors, we have not tested this much. We suspect though, that he will need exposure to separation and to remain crated whilst you go out! He loves companionship–human or dog, and would benefit from a family who is home more often than not, with time to cuddle and love on him!
