Maverick in Austin, TX
Maverick is a 4-year-old black and tan neutered male with some white markings. He appears to be a Cavalier and Australian Shepherd mix. With his Cavalier traits, he loves sweet cuddles and petting, especially belly rubs. Once he feels safe, he enjoys being right next to you or in your lap. He is a sweet and loving little guy. With his Aussie traits, he is quite alert, very shy with strangers and sensitive to unexpected noise/movements and unfamiliar situations.

Maverick has been through much trauma to get to where he is today. He was found injured and was taken in by the Austin Animal Center as a stray and then released to rescue. The vet believes he was hit by a car and/or attacked by a large dog. He had a large laceration on his cheek and a broken tooth and jaw (possibly due to his accident). He has fully healed from his wounds but occasionally will limp on his front shoulder; however, this keeps improving over time. He also has occasional internal sneezing episodes and an occasional cough after meals. While in foster care, Maverick was neutered and had a dental. He is up-to-date on all vaccines and preventatives and is microchipped.

Maverick is a cautious and timid little guy. He is quite alert and sensitive to noises, fast movements, strangers and any new or uncertain situations. Love, patience and repeated exposure to formerly scary situations have helped him become more comfortable. He has come to trust his foster family and his sweet personality comes out more each day.

He is house-trained and has an amazing bladder (no accidents). He has been leash-trained with his foster family and walks with caution or stops if strangers or new situations are encountered. He is learning to go on longer walks every day. He is food motivated, which has really helped with training.

Maverick will be best with a family, couple or individual who are patient as he learns to trust. The best living scenario would be one where his humans are frequently home. He thrives in the presence of patience, encouragement and treats. He is comfortable around other dogs (at least smaller, calm ones) and has done well with a Cavalier guest visiting his foster home – he seems to watch and learn from his furry friend. He has not been exposed to children or cats with his foster family. Once Maverick has bonded with his humans, the love and belly rubs will flow and he will forever be a loyal companion.
