Norman in Climax, NC
Meet Norman! This handsome hunk will be celebrating his 3rd birthday very soon – on December 1st, and is looking for his forever family to celebrate with!
He was given to rescue when his mom was diagnosed with cancer. It was difficult and heartbreaking for her to surrender him, but she knew it was the best thing for Norman. It’s clear that Norman was loved and very well cared for. He arrived neutered, microchipped, and current on vaccines and preventatives. He adjusted almost immediately upon arrival in his foster home.

His foster mom says that he is 110% Cavalier. He has all of the endearing qualities that Cavaliers possess and takes his job being a Cavalier very serious! Norman absolutely loves everyone. He will climb in laps and bear hug anyone that lets him, all while smothering them in kisses. He’s of course grown attached to his foster mom, but his favorite person in his foster home, is one of their 10 year old twin daughters. She and Norman love to play and snuggle together.

Norman also loves his foster Cavalier sister siblings. He will wrestle with them, battle over toys, and run circles around them in the yard. He also graciously settles down and snuggles with them during naps and crate time. All of his foster siblings are females. He doesn’t have a ton of experience around male dogs. He likes to steal toys and play a lot, so any potential adopters should take this into consideration if they have a dominant male dog already in the home. He also gets along with his foster family’s extremely dog savvy cat.

If you know Cavaliers, you know they love to eat! This is certainly the case for Norman. He politely waits his turn to eat during meal times, but if not supervised he will inhale his food and then try and steal one of the other dogs’ food. Treats are a little different – he tries to be first in line during treat time and has to be reminded to wait his turn. When he arrived to rescue, he was overweight, weighing around 23 pounds. Just by cutting his food back, carefully measuring each meal, and limiting treats, his foster mom has helped Norman lose a few pounds. He currently weighs 19.8 lbs and his ideal weight is around 17 pounds, so his new owners will need to be committed to continued weight loss and not cave to his puppy dog eyes and overfeed him.

He also arrived to us very meticulously groomed, with his fur cut somewhat short. His fur is growing out and he has long, thick, fluffy fur, even on the top of his head! This guy will definitely need regular grooming to help keep his thick, long fur free from mats and tangles.

Norman has a very mild case of hip dysplasia in his left hip. He doesn’t exhibit any signs of pain or discomfort. He runs, plays, climbs stairs, and navigates furniture just fine. He does take a daily over-the-counter joint supplement, along with fish oil, to help keep his joints lubricated. He will need to stay on these, as well as lose more weight. He does not have any exercise intolerances and in fact, loves leash walks and needs to be walked daily. He also enjoys short car rides, so he’d love to tag along on errands when feasible.

Norman is potty trained and is used to going out in a fenced yard for potty breaks. Like some other male dogs do, Norman will mark indoors, especially in new environments. His foster mom keeps a belly band on him indoors, so this will be recommended while adjusting to his new home.

He is perfectly crate trained. When first arriving in foster care, he did bark some at first when left in his crate, but after an adjustment period, he now happily runs to his crate for a treat when he knows it’s crate time. He can be a tad mischievous and sneak into trash cans, so crating him when unsupervised is the best thing for him initially. Other than the occasional marking and mischievousness, Norman is an obedient, good boy. He knows basic commands, comes when called, and quickly picks up on routines and cues.

Norman needs a loving, moderately active home, preferably with an experienced Cavalier owner – one that knows the breed and their need to be snuggled, not left alone for long periods of time, not overfed, groomed routinely, and preferably allowed on every surface of furniture and in every lap! He is a snuggly, sweet boy that just wants to be near his people at all times.

He does need a fenced yard, another young Cavalier companion to play with, and maybe even older dog-savvy kids and cats. His new family should have someone that is home most of the day and can take Norman for daily walks, and stay committed to his weight loss.
