Pug in University City, MO

Pug, yeah, I know a silly name for a Cavalier! And I am definitely a Cavalier! I came from a scary place and even though I am safe now, there are things that still frighten me and make me back away. My foster mom and fur brother and sister are helping me learn how to be a spoiled dog.

I just had my birthday on March 14, so am 4 years old. I had a fun time celebrating with my foster family. Napping on the couch with them and knowing that humans touch can feel really good. And did I say that I love doing zoomies around the yard, trying to catch a bird or squirrel?  

Mom says I am doing great and I do not potty in the house. Leashes still frighten me when I see them over my head. I love the tasty food I get now and my coat is looking nice and shiny! I do like to collect things like socks and tee shirts that I find on the bathroom floor, but I do not chew on them. Mom gives me my Lamb Chop and I can chew on that. I also like a bone every now and then. I sleep all night in a crate by her bed, but would really like to snuggle with my siblings and Mom on the big bed. Maybe you will let me snuggle with you?

I am Pug’s foster mom, and everything he has said is true. He is a sweet, shy and just now learning that human touch does not mean fear or pain. When Pug came into rescue he had psoriasis and yeasty ears. Slight corneal scarring was noted on his left eye, but no treatment was recommended. He was seen by the vet and had a dental where he lost four teeth, and is eating healthy food with a sardine added occasionally to help improve his skin and coat. We have also been using a medicated shampoo and the bare patches are filling in. He weighs 16.6 pounds, which is good for him.

He was very easy to potty train, although potty on leash is difficult and he will need more work to walk on leash. He is on a routine of going out every 3 hours or so. A securely fenced yard is a must. It would also be good for him to have another pup to help him learn the house routines and he does love to run and play with his siblings here.

Pug, like many dogs from commercial breeders, has issues with doorways, and needs a little space when going in and out. His foster brother and sister have helped with that. If I take one of them with me when I go out, he will bark, and want to go with us. He also lets me know when someone is at the door!  

When Pug first came into rescue he would run from and growl at people, but when picked up, never showed any aggression.  He would be held and petted until he could relax. This was done many times daily till now he is the first on the couch and although still apprehensive, wants to get in the middle when a person sits down and pets the other two. He can be sassy and will run after the ball, but hasn’t learned to bring it back. Pug is very treat motivated, and that will help with his progress.

Pug is a sweet, healthy, and active tricolor boy, and will bring lots of joy to his new home.
