Remington in Portland, OR
Remi is an adorable, approximately nine-year-old, 22-pound, tricolor male Cavalier with a heart of gold who is guaranteed to bring a smile to your face.

Remington, aka Remi, came to Cavalier Rescue after his owner passed away, but he has taken the change in stride. He is an amazing dog who will bring so much joy to his forever home. Remi’s current foster home includes two adults, two children (ages 11 and 8), a 19-year-old cat, and a five-year-old Cavalier. He seems happy with the organized chaos.

He has excellent manners: he is house-trained, sits patiently while his food is being prepared, and walks straight into his crate at bedtime. He sleeps in the crate but he is a bona fide snuggling guru who will cozy up in the perfect curve of your body if invited to the big bed.

Remi goes bonkers for walks and has quite the endurance! He could easily do three miles a day. When his foster mom takes the harness and leash off the hook by the front door, Remi sits at her feet looking like he might explode with excitement. He enthusiastically pokes his head through his harness and tries to assist when his foster sibling’s collar comes out. If he could talk, he would probably say: “Come on, come on, come on, come on… let’s go on a walk! I’m going to chase a squirrel, or a rabbit… Come on, come on, come on, come on…” Remi is in a harness because once he hits the sidewalk, he is off to the races. His path is a zigzag, racing from one bush to the next, desperate not to miss one scent. Despite his zeal, he is very polite when running into other dogs and neighbors. He doesn’t tangle the other dog’s leash, and he doesn’t bark.

One of his most endearing qualities is that he has no teeth, which leaves his tongue hanging out the right side of his mouth. He isn’t the neatest drinker, with water ending up on his chest and the floor, but a towel usually does the trick. Before bedtime, he enjoys his nightly blowout with the hair dryer to avoid skin issues.

The lack of teeth does not, repeat, does not impede his ability to eat, which is evident from his chicken-nugget-shaped figure. One day his foster family came home to find that he had gotten into the cat’s prescription dental-diet kibble, ironically. On a positive note, you won’t have to worry about expensive dental procedures. Just like a six-month-old baby, Remi can gum pretty much anything, and he enjoys small pieces of all sorts of fruits and veggies. He is occasionally offered a spread of peanut butter on a lick mat instead of something to chew.

Remi is hard of hearing, or he has exceptional selective hearing. Technically, you could call him anything, but don’t call him late for dinner! Since he can’t hear traffic sounds or calls to come, his forever home ought to have a large, securely fenced yard so he has plenty of room to run and explore. As soon as the door to the backyard is open, Remi is off like a shot, patrolling the fenced perimeter and sniffing for vermin. Once he has finished his rounds, he settles on the patio furniture to lounge, supervises the family during yardwork, or happily plays a decent game of fetch with a tennis ball.

A few health notes: Remi has a mild-to-moderate heart murmur (grade 3/6) associated with mitral valve disease. He is not currently on heart medication. He also has stiffness in his right hip (possibly both), though it hasn’t slowed him down. His new family may want to discuss a joint supplement or a daily anti-inflammatory with their vet.
