Ruger in Portland, OR
Meet Ruger, a faithful companion looking for his forever home!

If you’re looking for a loving, loyal companion who will happily be your little shadow, meet Ruger! This approximately 9-year-old Cavalier King Charles Spaniel came to rescue after his beloved owner passed away. Now Ruger is ready to find a forever family to love him through his golden years.

Ruger is a sweet, affectionate, happy boy with a tail that rarely stops wagging! He loves his people and has a wonderful way of making sure he’s never too far away. Wherever you go, Ruger will likely be right behind you, content simply to be wherever you are.

And then there’s his favorite activity: FETCH! Did we mention that Ruger REALLY loves to play fetch? He also enjoys his toys, long walks, and joining his people on adventures. But don’t worry, when it’s time for a quiet day at home, he’s perfectly happy to settle in for a good nap. Ruger has the best of both worlds: a playful spirit and a loving, easygoing nature.

Ruger gets along very well with other dogs, especially fellow Cavaliers. We don’t know how he would do with cats since his foster family doesn’t have any. He’s also a hit with kids, who seem to fall for him immediately! This smart boy is completely housebroken and loves having access to a doggie door so he can head outside whenever he pleases in a securely fenced yard. At bedtime, he’s happy sleeping in his crate, on his own dog bed, or even with you if you don’t mind sharing your space with a snorer!

Ruger has a funny little personality quirk: when he gets excited, he likes to talk! Sometimes he’ll start chatting away when he spots other dogs on his walks. Once he settles down, he may even rub his back on the ground. He’s got plenty of personality packed into that sweet little Cavalier body!

Like many senior Cavaliers, Ruger has a few special care needs, but they don’t diminish the wonderful companion he is. Ruger has a grade 5/6 heart murmur due to mitral valve disease (MVD) and takes Vetmedin. He is currently doing well, and his ongoing heart condition and medication needs should be discussed with his veterinarian as part of his continued care. With a little extra care, you will receive a lot of love.

In addition to seeing a veterinary cardiologist while in rescue, Ruger was microchipped, had a dental, and is now up to date with vaccines. Because of previous dental issues, Ruger had all his teeth removed. He’s adapted very well and enjoys his meals, but he will need to eat soft food for the rest of his life. At 24 pounds, he’s at a healthy weight.

Ruger has so much love left to give. He’s looking for a loving home where he’ll be included in family life, have someone to share his walks and adventures with, and always have a cozy place to land at the end of the day. In return, you’ll have a devoted little shadow, a champion fetch player, an enthusiastic conversationalist, and a faithful friend who will make every day a little brighter.
