Sage in Monticello, IL

Sage came to Cavalier Rescue USA when his family recognized that he needed more time with his people. He has quickly adjusted to his foster home and we expect he will do the same with a new forever family.

Sage just turned 2-years-old on March 27th. He has seen our vet who treated one ear for an infection. His former family relayed that he had seasonal allergies last fall. He is not having any allergy problems currently. His vet exam showed him to be in good health. He is up to date on his vaccines, is on Heartworm and flea/tick preventatives, and has a microchip. Sage weighed 16 pounds at his appointment.

Sage is living with a foster family who has one retiree and two older Cavaliers to keep him occupied during the day. Four days a week, a 3-year-old grandchild comes to spend the work day. Sage enjoys everyone! He loves to run in the physically fenced yard and playing with a ball is a daily activity. We try to spend a few extended periods of time outside in the morning. When the grandchild naps, so does Sage. Sage is ready to play and snuggle when the foster dad gets home from work.

Sage’s new family will need plenty of toys! He loves balls, yak chews, and stuffing free crinkle toys. Sage doesn’t always know the difference between things that are toys and things that aren’t toys. He is learning and will usually give up his prize easily. We have also been learning that shoes and socks and small kids toys need to be put away or kept out of his reach. Sage sleeps well in a crate at night, but would love to sleep with his people. Afternoon naps on the couch with his foster mom are a favorite. He loves to be on you when he sleeps!

Sage has had a few pee accidents in his foster home. He doesn’t currently have a clear signal that he needs to go outside. He is getting plenty of opportunities to be outside and we have been rewarding him with praise and treats to enforce the behaviors we want. Wearing a belly band for a time in a new home will help him remember. Having a furry friend would also help support Sage’s learning in a new environment.

Sage is very sweet. He is still young and you can see it in how he spends his day. He has periods when he needs to play or run and then he naps. He has learned our routine and has fit in with our family quickly.

Sage has a list of things he would like in a new family: Someone who works from home or is retired: Sage needs someone home the majority of the day. He is not happy when his people are gone too long. A secure and physically fenced yard: Sage did not have a fenced yard in his previous home and he loves the freedom of running full speed in the yard. A furry friend: Sage has not been exposed to cats, he has been asking the Cavaliers in his foster home to play, but only one has joined him.
