Shannon in Cinnaminson, NJ
Shannon is a beautiful 4-year-old Ruby girl who came to Cavalier Rescue USA from a commercial breeder. Her coat was very thin and very dry but has grown in nicely. DNA testing confirmed that Shannon is 100% Cavalier, though she is a bit bigger and taller than your typical cavalier. She is a strong, healthy girl of approximately 32 lbs. While in rescue, she was brought up to date on all vetting, including a dental, where she lost a few teeth, but that doesn’t hinder her at all. She is microchipped and has no health issues.
Shannon came into rescue terrified and basically frozen with fear. She immediately responded to her foster sisters who took her into the puppy pile like she’d always been there. Shannon has gotten along with any dogs she has met, so one or two friendly pups in the home would be best for her. She is friendly with cats, never aggressive but she does want to chase her foster brother, the resident cat.
Shannon is friendly with people and will calmly approach visitors but she is very timid and shy and it will take time to build up trust. She is learning how to be a family dog and will need patience, time and a gentle adopter to learn that soft hands and gentle voices are safe. Her favorite spot is on the couch with her people. It is there that she is comfortable enough to accept gentle pets. She is not currently ready for full body petting.
Shannon loves her time in the outdoors, sniffing out every odor left behind. She will need a physically fenced yard to keep her safe. She does walk on leash with a harness, but she could use some better manners. So many smells! With training, she would make a good jogging buddy. She does well on car rides, and she knows some basic commands, like “sit.” Well, “sit” is about it at the moment but we’re working on “stay” and “come” and making progress. Shannon is totally house trained and mastered the stairs quickly.
Shannon is crate trained and takes her meals in the crate. She gets very excited at meal times and literally inhales her food. She uses a slow bowl but is still quicker than the other pups. Shannon would prefer to sleep in the big bed and given her need to be close to her foster sisters and humans that is probably the best situation for her. She is a good, sound sleeper, not moving around much at all.
Another big plus for Shannon is that she is not afraid of noises either inside or out. Of course, she will startle with an unexpected loud noise nearby. Shannon is very skittish with unexpected movements.
Shannon is not really interested in playing with toys but she does like to “own” them and can get a little grouchy if another pup comes too close to her possession. During her first week with her foster family Shannon picked up her very first toy, an 8” rope toy. Unfortunately, another pup simply walked past and Shannon swallowed the toy in one gulp. Fortunately, she was scheduled for her spay and the vet was able to spay her and remove the rope in one surgery. So for that reason, we have begun a designated, supervised play time with all the dogs and all of the toys are oversized. Also, for that reason, there should not be any children in the home.
All in all, Shannon is a beautiful girl who has come a long way but still has a way to go and things to learn. She deserves a quiet home with gentle people who will help her become the dog she was meant to be.
