Zoey in Saline, MI

Calm and cuddly yet inquisitive, Zoey is a lovable 4-year-old Blenheim female who came into rescue after being retired from a small/family breeder. She enjoys going on walks, snuggling under her foster mom’s desk or curling up on a blanket on the couch.

Zoey has settled in nicely at her foster home after taking time to explore and get to know the new humans. She has excellent leash manners and is comfortable wearing a collar. Zoey does best walking alongside her foster mom with a harness and a light, loose leash, often following closely behind the other Cavalier in the foster home. She especially likes going on neighborhood walks and meeting the other Cavaliers who live nearby.

She’s very reliable with potty breaks when taken out regularly. To help with this consistency, Zoey should follow a regular potty schedule—every four to six hours while awake and not crated. She rarely barks and is still learning to give a clear signal when she needs to go outside. Zoey’s had only a few accidents in the foster home.

When she first arrived in foster care, Zoey was shy—she would often flop down or back into a corner when feeling uncertain. Within a few days, she became more confident. During the day, Zoey naps on the couch or on a dog bed in her foster mom’s office (who works from home). She sleeps through the night (10 p.m. – 7 a.m.) in her crate without needing a potty break. However, she loves to snuggle and would happily sleep in the people bed at night with her new family.

Zoey also goes in the crate when her humans are running errands during the day.

Although Zoey spends the day as a Velcro dog hanging out with her foster mom and the family Cavalier, her favorite time is snuggling on the lap of her foster dad. She’s smitten! She was also very fond of the grandfather at her initial home and continues to flash her deep brown eyes at the human men who come into her world.

A few years ago, after being underweight, Zoey was diagnosed with exocrine pancreatic insufficiency (EPI). This condition is being managed by a powdered pancreatic enzyme supplement added to her food twice a day. She now maintains a healthy weight and shows no symptoms of EPI. She will need to take this medication for the rest of her life. Zoey has a healthy appetite and eats well at mealtime. She shows no possessiveness over food and is very patient with her foster sister, who is still learning appropriate mealtime behavior.

During her recent vet visit a low-grade, intermittent heart murmur was detected. This should be monitored regularly by a vet, but no medication is required at this time. Zoey just had her teeth cleaned, is spayed, microchipped and up to date on her vaccinations. She is a great passenger in the car and travels comfortably in crates or carriers.

Zoey would love a forever home with a male human, someone home during the day for potty breaks and plenty of cozy blankets for snuggling. She gets along well with other dogs and enjoys the company of a teenage neighbor who visits often. In her previous home, Zoey was around outdoor cats, but not indoor cats. She has not been tested with young children. She is cautious around unfamiliar noises and reflective surfaces. A fenced yard and regular walks will help her thrive. Zoey will do best in a home with a predictable routine and moderate activity levels.
