Bella and Jax in Federal Way, WA

Meet the cutest two little peas in a pod, Bella and Jax! Offering twice the cuddles and love, they are an adult bonded pair. Sweet Bella, the 7-year-old ruby female, and her handsome BFF, Jax, an 8-year-old black and tan, found their way to foster care through no fault of their own after their caring owner had a change in life circumstances which necessitated the assistance of rescue. They are much beloved by their foster family who report both Bella and Jax as having sweet, gentle dispositions and a love for walks and napping on the couch.

Ever the lady, Bella is more reserved initially, but she will readily commit wholeheartedly to a favorite person and is friendly with everyone she meets. She enjoys playing with her toys just as much as settling down to cuddle or take a nap. She’s zesty and opinionated at times, but overall, very well behaved and even knows a couple of commands. She has been an absolute joy to her foster family.

Jax is the quintessential extrovert and has never met a stranger. Typical of the Cavalier breed, he is definitely a velcro dog, demonstrating an exceptionally deep level of care and awareness. Jax eagerly awaits affection and connection, following his people around the house in case they dole out extra pets or need a cuddle. He is a little goofball with a side of sneaky if food is left unattended. He, too, has been an absolute joy to his foster family and has closely bonded with their younger son.

Jax also has a little quirk of chasing shadows. His foster family has noticed this behavior when he’s outside in the sun with others around. He doesn’t seem bothered when he goes in the backyard for potty breaks, but when he sees shadows of the foster family kids playing, he stands around and tries to catch their shadows.

Both Bella and Jax are happy travelers as well as wonderfully behaved with gentle children and other dogs. They absolutely love going for walks and easy hikes, and their favorite place to be inside is on the couch. They’re truly an amazing pair and would do best in a home where their primary caregiver was home most of the time or with whom they could most always tag along.

Shortly after coming into rescue, Bella and Jax received a much-needed dental cleaning and a few extractions. Neither take any medications, and they both received clean bills of health from a trusted veterinarian. Bella weighs 15 lbs and Jax weighs 22 lbs.

While reviewing Jax’s previous vet records, we noticed and brought to the veterinarian’s attention that Jax was reported to have suffered two seizures in his lifetime. While in rescue though, he has never exhibited any behavior other than that of a happy, healthy pup, and so they recommend just monitoring him.

Both Bella and Jax are house trained, however, because they are such sweeties, their cues to go outside are subtle and may not alert everyone. So, it would be best if their caregiver can commit to a schedule to avoid any accidents.

Morton in Woodland Hills, CA

Hi there people! My name is Morton, but everyone calls me Morty. I am a noble nine-year-old fellow. I am the one that fits the bill if you are seeking a best buddy, BFF, confidant, escort and loyal companion. My birthdate is July 12, 2015 and my wagging tail says I am still young at heart. I’m contentedly hanging with my foster family, waiting for my soul mate and want my next home to be my last. Here is what my foster mom has learned about me, so pay attention.

Morty was living a charmed life in his previous home, however, the family’s human youngster had an allergy to dog fur and medicating their developing child was not a choice they could make, so they made a most difficult decision to entrust Morty to our care. Morty moved into his foster home and settled in quickly, as if he had been there forever.

Morty is mostly deaf but he doesn’t know anything is amiss. “Good Boy” “Come” “Sit” are hand signals he is responding to and he’s working on “Down.” Deaf dogs tend to be expert at reading body language and cues better than most might think. Not being stimulated by noises ensures Morty sleeps soundly and minimizes his bark voice to communicate that he needs to be let out, thinks you should notice it’s feeding time, and when he spots the intruding gardener working outside.

Morty is eager to start each morning with an outing to the backyard at dawn and returns to snooze until it is time to rise. Then he knows it’s breakfast time and does a little dance with a twirl or two and twinkle in his eyes. Food is his highly valued resource and diet management is key to keeping him healthy and fit. He is eager to go on leash walks or an outing in the car, and he loves to curl up on the couch with the family for TV time. He loves to meet new people, children delight him, and he is friendly with all other dogs he has met on social outings. What makes Morty happiest are the simple things in life: a treat, a walk to the park, a back scratch, belly rub, and getting in the car to go are the things that bring him joy.

Morty is current on all vaccinations and had a cardiology assessment late last year. He does have heart disease common to the breed, however he was assessed at stage B1 so there is no need for medications or treatment at this time. Regular monitoring is needed along with x-rays to compare for any changes at least every 12 months. At his rescue vet exam, Morty weighed in at 19 pounds. He was treated for a mild ear infection in one ear, and the vet recommended a dental to remove some loose teeth which was completed with five extractions.

Morty and his foster mom want his golden years to include a loving human as a trusted and loyal attendant to provide a home with relaxing areas and luxurious accommodations to sleep (maybe your bed). A secure backyard for success in acclimating one last time is desired because that is what he is accustomed to, but he mostly likes to stay in the house with his humans. Morty’s potty reliability is impeccable. He will head over to the back door and sometimes even give notice with a soft bark or whine when he wants to be let out.

Morty will be a faithful companion in a short time once you have gained his trust. He will give you his heart for your loyalty and love in return. If you would like to be considered to be his family, please complete an online application if you have not yet done so. Then send an email with a note of your interest to Donna at d_beirne@yahoo.com. Applicants should be within a comfortable driving distance for a meet and greet in Woodland Hills. Please read about our adoption process: Our Adoption Process and frequently asked questions: FAQ

Leonard in AZ

Update: Leonard has a visit scheduled to meet a potential new family so we are only taking backup applications for him for now. Thank you!

Leonard is a sweet boy that must be on someone’s lap most of the time. He was once loved and cared for but his mom passed away. Sometime after that, Leonard was found on a street in distress and crying because he was lost. A wonderful couple found him. They did all they could for him by shaving him down and removing hundreds of ticks. He was in rough shape but a vet appointment could not be arranged for almost a week. Then Cavalier Rescue USA came to pick him up.

At the animal hospital he had many tests since he had so many ticks imbedded in him. Thankfully, he was negative for all tick borne illnesses and heart worms. He was given an antibiotic shot and Doggy Benadryl. His ears were swollen shut due to the ticks. A soothing ear drop was especially made for him because the Otoscope could not be inserted into his very swollen ears. His skin was infected and scabby. A medicated shampoo was helpful in treating that issue.

With all that news – he was healthy and recoverable! When the medications started working Leonard became a different pup. He wasn’t itching any more and could relax. As his personality came out he is well behaved, never had accidents in the house, started playing with toys and the other dogs, and knows some commands. He knows his name and comes when called. He was neutered the first of August.

Leonard does not like being alone. He has separation anxiety and will cry and bark when the humans leave. If there are other dogs he seems more relaxed and only cries for a few minutes. Another dog or dogs should help him in his forever home. Although Leonard does not like the crate, when riding in the car he will cry and fuss. As soon as he is taken out, he is fine with human interaction.

It is difficult not to fall-in love with this boy. He is sweet, cuddles, and loves his foster family. Although he is a “Velcro Pup” he likes to sleep in a dog bed with his doggy siblings. He is excited to see you in the morning and gets very playful.

Leonard is a champ at getting baths and loves to be brushed. He will lay on your lap and be brushed for a long time.

If you are interested in being Leonard’s forever family, please fill out our online application if you haven’t already and then email Carolyn at cavalier.rescue.usa@mac.com so she knows of your interest. Leonard is being fostered in Green Valley and Pine Top Arizona and residents of Arizona will be given first consideration for this sweet boy.

Wally in Peoria, AZ

This handsome young man is Wally. Born November 14, 2022, and less than two years old, Wally is a beautiful, Ruby Cavalier King Charles Spaniel. Wally’s first year of life was spent being passed between several different breeders as he was intended to be a breeding dog. When the breeder he was last with passed away, a very caring lady stepped in and offered to give Wally the loving home he deserved. She soon realized, however, that she would not be able to provide Wally with the adventure and active lifestyle which he so clearly yearned. That is when she reached out to Cavalier Rescue USA.

We are determined to find the perfect forever family for this amazing boy. He is active, playful and fun, but also well able to relax and go with the flow. He’ll do best with a calm, quiet family that has another loving, playful dog, but also with a family that will include him in their adventures, like hiking, camping, visiting new places.

Wally is a big bundle of happy energy. He loves to prance through the house squeaking some highly prized toy. He also loves chasing a ball or running zoomies and playing tuggie with his foster dog siblings! Wally was recently introduced to puzzle toys, which he thinks are just the best invention ever! Wally has a very inquisitive spirit and loves every new experience. He is a little kid at heart, just looking for his next adventure and finds interest in the smallest detail.

He loves his crate! We’ve named it, Wally’s Man Cave, because it is a very special place to him. He would love to be allowed to have a Man Cave in his new home, as well.

Wally rides well in the car; either napping or taking in the scenery. He simply enjoys the adventure and spending time with his people. If you have a little computer or desk work to catch up on, you will likely find Wally napping nearby. He is a perfect gentleman while waiting for his meals to be prepared and served. He will sit for every meal, whether asked to do so or not. Wally recently made his first trip to the groomer and handled it like a champ!

Wally would not do well in a home with birds, hamsters, or other small critters kept indoors. He is a born hunter with a very strong prey drive. So much so, he alerts his foster family to any animal, bird or possible human intruder he sees on TV. If he sees a rabbit on his morning walk, he must be distracted, or he will try to charge after it. He has not been cat tested.

Wally’s favorite activity is clearly his morning walk. Initially, he pulled hard on his leash, however, with a lot of practice, he has learned to walk easy and enjoy plenty of sniffing. That said, he is leash reactive. Should he see another dog while on a walk, he barks, lunges and pulls, which creates a difficult situation for everyone. Wally is a sturdy boy and very strong so he requires someone strong enough to handle this and someone able and willing to continue his training. Currently, he is taking his morning walks in a park area where there is little chance of meeting another dog, which is working well for him.

Wally proved to be a runner in his prior home – out the front door and down the street, just as fast as he could go! He refused to come when his name was called. Since being in his foster home, Wally has worked very hard to come in from the backyard as soon as he hears his name called. He has made great improvement, yet the little kid in him can be easily distracted. For his safety, continued work will be needed in this area.

Wally just finished a 10-day course of meds for a yeast infection in one ear.  He must continue the medication once weekly until the medication is gone. The vet believes this infection was due to allergies, so his ears will need to be monitored by his new vet going forward. He has eye drops, given as needed, also due to allergies. Wally takes one probiotic daily for his digestive health. He takes Heartgard once a month. He is up to date on all vaccines, is microchipped, and neutered. He weighs 22 lbs.

Although Wally loves adventure and outdoor activities, it is very important he has a calm, quiet place to call home. Once his zoomies and playful activities are done for the day, Wally would prefer to unwind with calming music and be part of a relaxed and quieter household – one with little stress, drama or loud noise. He needs assurance he is loved and safe with his new family.

Wally takes his cues from the other dogs in his foster home and loves being part of the pack. He will do best with another playful dog in his new home, of similar age, interests and abilities who exhibits healthy, well-adjusted behavior around stranger dogs and is not leash reactive.

Wally’s first year had little to no consistency or stability. For this reason, his new family must be prepared to spend lots of quality time with him. Continued and consistent training will be critical to his successful adoption and Wally’s life-long happiness. Wally will do best with a patient, loving, dog-experienced family, prepared to continue working on his leash reactivity and general training. For the family willing to commit to working with Wally, he will repay you with years of love, loyalty, happy memories and guaranteed smiles!

If you are interested in adopting Wally, and feel we’ve just described your family’s lifestyle and home life, please complete our online adoption application if you haven’t already. Then, please send an email to Carolyn at smallpaws4@mac.com letting her know of your interest in Wally. Please note that while we are open to out of state applicants for this pup, first consideration is being given to families within a few hours drive of Peoria, AZ.

Henry in Brentwood, CA

Meet Henry in Brentwood, CA! If you are looking for a little buddy to go on adventures with you, look no further! Snuggly little Henry is 1.5 years old. He is on the smaller end of the scale for Cavaliers at around 14 lbs., with a flat, smooth, silky, tricolor coat that is still coming in.

Henry, recently returned from a two-week camping RV trip with his foster parents, furry foster brother and did great. To Henry, the whole world has become an adventure!

Henry had no concept of toys but once he figured out those strange objects were fascinating and exciting things to play with, he put all of his new-found puppy energy into chasing, tossing, shaking, and tug. His favorite activity (other than wrestling with his foster Cavalier brother) is rolling his ball under furniture for his foster mom to get out! That’s really exciting!

When Henry was rescued, he was a terrified and shy little guy, especially afraid of hands reaching out to him. He is learning that hands don’t hurt and very often offer treats and pets. He is still reactive to other strange dogs and causes a big ruckus if he thinks they might get too close. He will need training and patience to overcome this and become the friendly, sweet little dog Cavaliers are known and bred to be. He loves his foster mom and dad and is a “velcro dog” following them everywhere in the house. His favorite spot is to be snuggled in someone’s lap.

Henry is smart and has learned so much in his short time in a real home. He learns basic commands quickly and is extremely food and praise motivated so training should go quickly. On walks, we are learning to “stop pulling” and we believe he’ll get it but a save leash walker with training skills would be great. He is doing remarkably well with potty training as long as his people are vigilant about taking him outside every couple of hours, therefore we are looking for a home where you are retired or home all the time to cater to his needs.

We are not sure if Henry would do well as an only dog but we know for sure he’ll do great with a fur-brother or sister of similar size, who can be a good role model for him. He adores his foster Cavalier brother. He has zero tolerance to fleas and requires a full fenced yard.

He is getting more used to kids and would probably love a calm, responsible older human brother or sister once he gets to know them. Kids under teenager years would be too young for him, since he can be scared. A calm household would be fantastic. He hasn’t been exposed to cats, so we are not sure what his reaction would be to a feline companion.

When Henry arrived he was underweight and had resistant yeast infections in both ears. His ears were treated several times but may need some follow-up. He has healed nicely from his neuter, and is now at or close to his perfect weight of about 14 lbs. He is up-to-date with his vaccinations. He currently eats a healthy diet of Rawbble, Small Batch or Tuckers freeze-dried raw, which would be beneficial for his adoptive parents to continue in order to possibly avoid issues with future yeast infections.

Sweet Henry sleeps happily in his crate, but would much rather be snuggling on the big bed with his humans. He is good crated for short periods when his people have to run errands without him. Of course he’d rather go along on those errands when he can. He is an excellent traveler and usually is sound asleep for the journey.

Henry is a sensitive little soul who needs lots of love and gentle attention, as he comes out of his shell, gains more confidence and begins to blossom.

If you think you are the right fit for a lifetime of love with Henry, please complete our online application if you haven’t already and then email our Northern California Coordinator, Sarah Knudson at sayrahk@gmail.com.

Cookie in Whittier, CA

Here is Cookie with her new family…

Meet Cookie! When the recipe calls for ¾ Cavalier, ¼ Cocker Spaniel and an extra cup of sugar, you get the sweetest Cookie ever! This beautiful 2 year old girl, born 12/14/21, found her way into rescue when her family experienced some personal challenges and made the difficult decision to help her find a new home.

An affectionate master cuddler, Cookie will lay her head on your chest and look up at you with her soulful eyes. She aims to please as long as she is by your side, 24/7. Cookie’s gorgeous wavy coat exudes glamour as she happily prances throughout the day. She is very content playing with her toys and has a delightful spirit, making an ideal work from home partner.

Cookie is gentle with young children and thoroughly enjoys spending time with her foster family in their yard. However, all doors and gates need to be carefully managed because Cookie will wander off if given the opportunity. She has separation anxiety and gets nervous when her foster mom is not in clear sight. Once Cookie realizes that her humans are close by, all is right in her world. Cookie gets along with other like-minded canines which can help with her overall anxiety.

While in rescue, Cookie was spayed, microchipped and brought up to date on vaccinations. Due to a prolapsed third eyelid, often referred to as ‘cherry eye’, Cookie underwent a surgical procedure to alleviate this condition. She was an outstanding patient and has fully recovered. Cookie is doing well with potty training as long as she is kept on a schedule of frequent breaks throughout the day. Being treat motivated has helped with reinforcing expected positive behaviors.

Did you say watch dog? Cookie is very alert and will bark when introduced to new friends or family members, including the Amazon delivery driver! Her bark is loud and can be startling but once you offer her a treat, she becomes your best friend. Cookie clearly favors females and is not yet comfortable with males. This may improve with time as she settles in with a new family and becomes a more confident, secure dog. Cookie has not had much experience being out in the world. She is getting used to leash walking but due to pulling, continued training is necessary.

The ideal recipe for Cookie’s new home would involve a family filled with overflowing measures of the patience and guidance this love bug deserves so she will feel treasured and cherished. The outcome will be a wonderful sidekick and best buddy.
